An Heirloom Quilt Made from Silk Ties

Good Monday, Quilt lovers! Have I got a quilt for you to love today! Janet Raleigh has been working on this exquisite piece for several months and she recently brought it in for us to see. It is made entirely of silk ties! After carefully preparing the ties, she backed each with a very soft, woven tricot stabilizer before cutting them to size. Janet made twenty beautiful pineapple blocks to make this quilt. She then backed it with a hand dyed silk broadcloth and hand quilted it to make a true work of art that will be a treasured heirloom! Great job, Janet, and thank you for sharing!

Have you ever quilted with silk fabrics? A Stitch in Time carries a variety of silk fabrics, including hand dyed silk fat quarters (yardage is also available by special order). We also have a silk/cotton blend on the bolt in several colors. (Both entirely machine washable!) Quilting is outstanding on silk…add silk batting and backing and you have one delightful quilt! Even adding a fat quarter or two to your regular cotton fabrics will add a special touch.

Show and Tell at A Stitch in Time

At one of our Tuesday Technique classes we happened to have the camera rolling during the show and tell session. I thought you might like to see the quilts and spur your creativity…or at least celebrate Karen and Linda’s accomplishments!

What’s New at A Stitch in Time?

Well, have a look-see in this video to find out! We have so many new fabrics and products! Christmas is just around the corner so it’s time to think about quick and easy projects to give and to decorate with. The new Amy Butler voiles and featherwale corduroys are really beautiful. I can just see them made into scarves, bags, quilts and garments. We have a voile quilt at the shop that is so soft and buttery…and the voile is 60″ wide so a horizontal strip quilt can be made very quickly and is the perfect size to cozy under. You can have it finished and wraped under the tree in record time! The courduroy is great as a quilt border, skirt or bag. Come on in and we’ll show you how!

Quilts of Valor Group

Happy Day to you! It’s overcast outside so it’s a good day to be inside and sew!

Recently A Stitch in Time held our first “Under Our Wings” Quilts of Valor class. We had a great time as Peggy James (third from left) instructed everyone in a beautiful mystery quilt that she had designed. Peggy orchestrated the whole event; we had sewers, pressers, pinners, cutters, and “gofers”! Everyone was needed and one job was as important as the next. By the end of the afternoon all blocks were sewn and rows were coming to life. We’ll hold one more session to finish this one and then we look forward to making lots more! Peggy lined our quilts up to be sent to the front lines in Afghanistan, and she received donations from a two local veterans that we’ll use for postage to get them there. Thank you to every quilter that participated in this class, and thank you to Peggy for your heart for Quilts of Valor!

Starring Starling!

You may have read recent postings on my blog about A Stitch in Time’s “Dancing Batiks Quilt Retreat”, held this past August at the Cat Creek Lodge in Franklin, NC. Lucille Amos was our fearless leader (teacher). We had a wonderful time learning Judy Niemeyer’s unique techniques for paper piecing. She really does have wonderful patterns of fabulous quilts. Visit her website for a look-see.

Starling Bradley, Judy Niemeyer aficionado, was one of the attendees at the retreat. Her Dancing Batik quilt is coming along beautifully and I’m sure I’ll share it with you when she is finished. On a recent visit to our shop, however, she brought another Judy Niemeyer quilt she had made and I want to share that with you today. Accolades, Starling!

Tillie’s Turtle!

A Stitch in Time’s Tuesday Technique class was a lot of fun yesterday! Before class, we always have “show and tell” and I wanted to share one item that I knew would just make you smile! Tillie Bohanan took our “Serendipity Turtle” quilt class (a Susan Carlson design). That turtle is NOT a print…it’s a cleverly designed fabric collage! She shared her finished project to raves. (And fyi, we DO have another class scheduled…won’t you join us?)
